I
hope everyone had a great 2011 and that 2012 will be even
better. We have a great opportunity to grow the
number of Amateur Radio
operators in the new year. After they get
licensed, it is important that
we encourage them to get them involved in
Emergency Communications, and
help them get on the air so they can participate
in operating
activities. It would be great help them get more
pleasure from Amateur
Radio by encouraging them take on some hands on
Amateur Radio projects.
Bill
Morine, N2COP, North Carolina SM the Chairman of the ARRL Public
Relations Committee recently announced the launch
of the new “Do It
Yourself”, or “DIY”, video and the accompanying
PR campaign. The
“DIY” campaign is a major initiative for ARRL and
is in addition to
the Hello Campaign and the Emergency Radio
support program. “DIY”
has an emphasis on experimentation, kit building
and design. Check
“DYI” out for yourself at http://www.arrl.org/wedothat-radio-org.
A brief warning, The ARRL PR Committee and staff
did lots of work so be
prepared to spend some time, watching the video,
and looking at the
links that interest you.
I
was watching a morning news show about a week ago and a
comedian named Jimmy Fallon was reading some
Thank You letters that
were a little twisted. An example? OK!
Thank you Microbreweries for
making my alcoholism seem like a really fun
hobby. That inspired me to
write a twisted Thank You note for Amateur Radio.
Thank You guy who
wrote the article on how he put up a 150 ft.
tower with monobanders for
10, 15, 20 and 40 for $100, for reminding me I
need to make friends with
a neighbor that would be willing to help me out
with his crane and his
aluminum tubing scrap pile. I hope you get
a small laugh from the
Thank You Note, but if you didn’t, send me one
you think is funny.

The
Ozark Mountain Amateur Radio group Hamfest was great again this
year. James French, KC0TQD, and the OMAR members
are to be
congratulated on the organization and operation
of the event. All the
major equipment dealers and an overflow number of
flea market vendors
gave all those attending an excellent opportunity
to get some radio
gear. The radio controlled airplane display
was a real unique feature
of the Hamfest. Following the Hamfest there
was a model jet plane
being flown around the building and very high
into the air. It was
hard to believe that it was January 7th and 65
degrees. I hope everyone
in the area can make it to next year’s event, you
will not be
disappointed.
RENEW
YOUR ARRL CLUB AFFILIATION THIS MONTH.
With
the election of new officers for 2012, sometimes the
ARRL Club Affiliation update slips through the
cracks. Each year
it’s a good idea for every MO Section Radio Club
to go to the website
and update their club information and submit it.
That insures that your
club stays on the Active list for MO Section
Radio Clubs. Once a Club
is affiliated it will always be an ARRL
Affiliated Radio Club, but it
can go to an inactive status if the club
information is not updated at
least every two years. Today we have 52 active
Radio Clubs in the
Missouri Section. Go to the Find-a-Club
webpage using this link.
http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club Use the
Section box to select
Missouri, and search. The Radio Clubs are
listed in Alphabetical order
by the City and I have found that to be the
easiest way to find the one
you are looking for. After you have found
the Club, click on the Go
Now link and once you get to the Club info, use
the EDIT button on the
upper right to go to Club information site. Make
the necessary changes
and Submit. Three days after you have made the
changes, they should
show up on the ARRL Club Page.
